To configure the wireless network infrastructure, we should first prepare the equipment , including :
- Some units Laptop / desktop PC (which has been equipped with a wireless adapter) with Microsoft Windows XP operating system .
- Access Point, in this case I use a Linksys Wireless - G Broadband Router WRT54G.
- 1 piece of UTP cable type straight.
Configuring the Access Point
Configuring the AP can be done through a web browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or the other. The scenario used in this paper is the AP will be connected directly to a laptop using UTP cable type straight through RJ - 45 port is provided. Some things to consider before configuring the AP, among others :
- By default AP already has an IP address, username and password. This information can be found in the manuals or CDs be included upon purchase. For example, AP Linksys WRT54G that I use has the IP address : 192.168.1.1, username : admin and password : admin (remember! username and password case sensitive properties or small capitalization differentiated). Change the IP address of the laptop that we use in order to configure the IP address included in the AP classes, for example if the IP address of the AP :
192.168.1.1 IP address 192.168.1.2 should laptop or more authors
using the IP address : 192.168.0.1 , subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 .
because I changed the IP to 192.168.0.2 AP . this step for
will allow us to share the connection .
Well we just started the configuration :
- Connect the AC power adapter into a power socket AP
- Connect AP with laptop that will be used to configure using UTP cable type straight through RJ - 45 port is provided.
- Change the IP address to 192.168.0.1 laptop or adjust the range of your AP class IP address .
- Open your favorite web browser ( in this case I use Mozilla Firefox ) . Then type the address http://[IP address of your AP] Addrees bar section , for example: http://192.168.0.2, then hit enter on the keyboard.
- The next window will display a form to fill in your username and password to log in to your AP configuration page.
- If the username and password you entered is correct then your AP configuration page will be displayed. Up to this point we have managed to get into the main page of the Linksys WRT54G AP device configuration . The main page of the AP 's configuration menus arranged horizontally like Setup, Wireless, Security, Access Restrictions, Application & Gaming, Administration, and Status . Each menu has a sub menu eg menu has a sub menu Setup Basic Setup, DDNS, Addrees Mac Clone, and Advanced Routing.
In this paper may not be explained throughout the menus there. Configuration will only be directed how to build a wireless network infrastructure for the sake make use of Wireless LAN AP on a small scale.
The contents of the menus available on the Linksys WRT54G AP is :
- 1. At the top of the Internet Setup group you can set the network configuration on your internet connection. Usually when we subscribe to the internet, internet service provider or ISP (Internet Service Provider) will provide further arrangement on how and what should be set in this section to connect your network to the Internet. For this part you leave it in the default state just because we are not going to connect to the internet.
- 2. Still in the Setup menu Basic Setup sub- menu, scroll to the bottom of your web browser page. In the Network Setup settings to give your local network .
- Local IP Address : enter the IP address you will use on the network. This address will also act as the default IP address of your AP.
- Subnet Mask : leave the default condition in accordance with the class of the IP address that you provide .
- DHCP Server : Enable option means your AP can act as a DHCP server that automatically assigns IP addresses to client network members . Instead Disable option means AP can not handle giving the client an IP address automatically .
- Starting IP Address : an IP address that will automatically be given to the client ( if DHCP is enabled ) starts from the number you provided . For example, if filled to 100 means first DHCP client its IP address 192.168.1.100 , 192.168.1.101 dst second client .
- Maximum Number of DHCP users : the maximum number of client DHCP server .
- 3. Now switch to the Wireless menu Basic Wireless Settings sub menu .
- Wireless Network Mode : specify the permitted client wireless adapter to connect to the AP. Disable means turning off the wireless function so there is no client that can connect to the AP. Mixed means AP can accept client connections from 802.11b and 802.11g . B -Only intention AP only accepts client connections with standard 802.11b and G -Only means that AP only accepts connections from client 802.11g .
- Wireless Network Name ( SSID ) : fill in the name of your wireless network.
- Wireless Channel : use a different channel to avoid interference between the members of the wireless network , such as channel 1 , 6 , 11, will not jail each one another or channels 2 , 7 , 12 and 3 , 8 , 13 . channel which should be chosen ? , adjust to the conditions around you. For example, your wireless adapter detect jaringa with channel 1 means use channel 6 for the wireless network you are awak .
- Wireless SSID Broadcast : Enable option means the SSID you will be shown all the client without the use of special tools or Disable , which means you hide the SSID to the client network members .
- 4. Next is still on the menu but select sub menu Wireless Wireless Security . In this menu you can select the data encryption security standards such as WEP , WPA or WPA2 . see explanation in this sub menu sbagai following :
- Security Mode : safety standards that can be applied in your network such as WEP, WPA or WPA2 .
- Default Transmit Key : windows xp key known by the term index. Figures 1-4 show that you should give 4 pieces but the prevailing security lock is key index active .
- WEP Encryption : is a type of encryption used in accordance with the scurity mode you select. Try to change the security mode to WPA Personal / Enterprise, the part will automatically change.
- Key 1 - Key 4 : security key that must be entered by any client will join the AP . Key 1 for default transmit key 1 , Key 2 to default transmit key 2 and so on.
- Passphrase : used to enter the security key in an instant. To use it just type any word after that click the Generate button , then you will automatically be created for the keyword stuffing box security on Key 1 - Key 4.
- 5 . Next is still on the menu but now Wireless enabled Wireless MAC Filter submenu . When the Enable MAC Filter on the right you can determine which clients are allowed to join kejaringan based on the client MAC address . To view the MAC Address of the computer or laptop how is at the window type the command ipconfigs / All , MAC address of your computer is the data on physial hexadecimal address . Next enter the MAC address of the data by clicking the Edit MAC Filter List .
Well up to this point is actually the AP can be used to build the network infrastructure . Of AP in the minimal configuration we have the following data :
- IP address , Subnet Mask , Getway , DHCP , DHCP Client Number , Client IP Address to your network .
- Wireless mode (Mixed , G -Only , B -Only), SSID and Channel.
Security standards (WEP), Default Transmit Key or Key Index, Key 1 - Key 4 , or use Passphrase.
